A free Mithila painting class has recently been initiated in rular village in Darbhanga, Bihar, an endeavor aimed at preserving and promoting the traditional art form that holds a deep cultural significance for the region. Mithila painting, also known as Madhubani art, is a centuries-old folk art style, originating from the Mithila region, which includes parts of Bihar and Nepal. The initiative, led by ASHTADAL and supported by community, seeks to provide accessible training to individuals, particularly young artists, who want to learn and continue this age-old tradition.

The classes focus on teaching both the conventional techniques of Mithila painting, which are characterised by intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and natural motifs, as well as modern adaptations to cater to contemporary tastes. Students are taught to use natural dyes, handmade brushes, and cloth or paper canvases, emphasizing sustainability and eco-friendly practices. The classes also introduce participants to the different styles within Mithila art, including Bharni, Kachni, and Godna, each with its distinct characteristics and themes.

The free program has garnered significant attention, drawing participants from neighbouring villages. Currently 300+ Students age between 8-20 years are getting benefited by the class which runs 6 days a week between 2-6pm.

The initiative is part of a broader movement in Bihar to revitalise traditional crafts and improve socio-economic conditions by creating sustainable employment opportunities.
